With the development of science and technology, most of us will comment:“Life is speeding up. Everyone is getting unwell.”

This may sound like something someone would say today. But in fact, an unknown citizen who lived in Rome in 53 AD wrote it.

We all love new inventions. They are exciting, amazing and can even change our lives. But have all these developments really improve the quality of our lives?

Picture this, you’re rushing to finish your homework on the computer. Your mobile phone rings, a QQ message from your friend appears on the screen, and the noise from the television is getting louder and louder. Suddenly the computer goes blank and you lose all your work. Now you have to stay up all night to get it done. How calm and happy do you feel?

Inventions have speeded up our lives so much that they often leave us feeling stressed and tired. Why do you think people who live far away from noisy cities, who have no telephones, no cars, even no electricity often seem to be happier? Perhaps because they lead simpler lives.

One family in the UK went “back in time” to see what life was like without all the inventions

we have today. The grandparents, with their daughter, and grandsons Benjamin, 10, and Thomas, 7, spent nine weeks in a 1940s house. They had no washing machine, microwave, computer or mobile phones.

The grandmother, Lynn said, “It was hard physically, but not mentally.” She believed life was less materialistic. “The more things you have the more difficult life becomes.” She said. The boys said they found less to fight over, such as their computer. Benjamin also noticed that his grandmother had changed from being a “trendy, beer- drinking granny to one who cooked things”.

Here are some simple ways to beat the stress often caused by our inventions!

●Don’t be available all the time.Turn off your mobile phone at certain times of the day.Don’t check your emails every day.

●Make sure you spend some time talking to your family.Set aside one evening a week when you don’t turn on the television.Play cards and chat instead.

●Get a low-tech hobby.Every day,do something in the old-fashioned way, such as walking to have a face-to-face meeting instead of using the email or telephone. ●Don’t worry too much about life—laugh more! 56. The passage is mainly about . A.the important roles technology plays in our everyday life

B.improvements of our life with technology

C.problems with technology

D.major changes are likely to happen to technology

57. The writer uses the quote at the beginning of the story to .

A.point out that you experience some big problems and they may be the same

B.tell us what life was like long time ago

C.make us wonder what causes such a thing to happen

D.share a truth about life

58. Why did the family choose to spend some time in a 1940s house?

A.Because they were curious about how people lived without modern inventions.

B.Because they liked to live simple lives. C.Because they were troubled by modern inventions. D.Because living in a different time would be a lot of fun for them.

59. What does the underlined word “available” in the first suggestion offered by the writer mean?

A.Busy on line. C.Be able to move.

To celebrities, what question is frequently asked besides their loving affairs? It’s plastic surgery. And many perfect-looking pop stars keep denying they have changed their facial appearance. Some even get angry at any claims that they’ve been under the knife.

So it was a bit shocking when Chinese singer Heng Yue boldly announced last month she would have plastic surgery, becoming the first celebrity to do so in the mainland.

Heng, with a broad range and penetrating(有穿透力的)voice, had been invited to sing the theme song for Chen Kaige’s film The Promise and TV drama such as Ma Dashuai and Liu Laogen. But the popularity of the songs shaded her. Her look just wasn’t very charming.

On March 24, Heng, who declined to reveal her age, endured2 18 operations on her face. It was a comprehensive 8-hour plastic surgery job including nose reshaping and eye operations, said to cost around 650,000 yuan.

“I am so fond of singing,” said Heng, “I’m hoping to go further in my career as a singer. However, I’ve found my plain looks are making me less competitive.”

Heng said that many TV shows were interested in her singing, but rejected her, saying that she looked just so so. So the chance went to someone who looked more attractive or charming on camera.

Certainly, Heng’s not the only star to go seeking perfection. Tian Yungcheng, a doctor specializing in plastic surgery, said that Heng was just one of about 200 stars he had operated on.

“Whenever we turn on the TV, mose of the celebrity faces on stage, I believe, have had operation.” Tian said.

“Pop stars are reluctant to tell anyone about their surgery since they’re under the pressure from the public who find it hard to accept fake beauty. But I don’t see it as wrong if a person just wants to be perfect or have a more pleasant look for others to appreciate.” Tian said.

61.What does the underlined sentence “they’ve been under the knife” (in Para. 1) mean?

A.They have been wounded with a knife. C.They have been threatened by people.

B.They have had operations on their faces. D.They have been the victims of the operations.

62. Which of the following is NOT TRUE about Heng Yue?

A.She has a gift for music. B.She keeps her age as a secret.

C.She used to have an unattractive face. D.She was the first pop star to have plastic surgery.

63. We can infer that . A.Tian Yungcheng is well-known in celebrity circles

B.most people support the beauty industry C.Tian Yungcheng is an attractive doctor D.people have little trouble in accepting fake beauty

64. Why did Heng Yue have plastic surgery?

A.She wanted to be a pop star. B.She wanted to marry an attractive man.

C.She wanted to be an actress. D.She wanted to be more competitive.

65. Why do some stars get angry when asked about plastic surgery?

A.Because they don’t want to show off their beauty and wealth. B.Because they can’t accept their fake beauty and status in their career.

C.Because it’s hard to explain to their fans.

D.Because they may suffer the pressure from people if they tell the truth.

Generally speaking, nobody would like to put themelves into troubles what is actually a simple case. It seems that some people go out of their way to get into trouble. That’s more or less happened on the night that Nashville police officer Floyd Hyde was on duty.

“I was on the way to a personal-injury accident in West Nashville. As I got onto Highway 40, blue lights and sirens(警笛) going, I fell in behind a gold Pontiac Firebird that suddenly seemed to take off quickly down the highway. The driver somehow panicked at the sight of me. He was going more than a hundred miles an hour and began passing cars on the shoulder.”

But Hyde couldn’t go after him. Taking care of injured people is always more important than worring about speeders, so the officer had to stay on his way to the accident. But he did try to keep the Firebird in sight as he drove, hoping another nearby unit(附近的警局)would be able to step in and stop the speeding car. As it turned out, keeping the Firebird in sight was not that difficult. Every turn the Pontiac made was the very turn the officer needed to get to the accident scene.

Hyde followed the Pontiac all the way to his destination. At that point he found unit had already arrived at the accident scene. His help wasn’t needed. Now he was free to try to stop the driver of the Firebird, who by this time had developed something new to panic about.

“Just about that time,” Hyde says. “I saw fire coming out from under that car, with blue smoke and oil going everywhere. He had blown his engine. Now he had to stop.”

“After I arrested him, I asked him why he was running. He told me he didn’t have a driver’s license”.

That accident cost the driver of the Firebird plenty extra --- a thousand dollars for the new engine --- not to mention the charges for driving without a license, attempting to run away, and dangerous driving.

66. The meaning of “go out of one’s way” (in Para. 1) probably means ______

A.changing directions B.forgeting duties

C.speeding up D.taking trouble to do something

67. Why did the driver of the Firebird suddenly speed down the highway?

A.Because he thought the police officer wanted to stop him. B.Because he realized he had to hurry to the accident scene. C.Because he was racing with another driver on the road. D.Because he wanted to overtake other cars on the shoulder.

68. Which of the following statements is TRUE?

A.Someone else was taking care of the injured person. B.The Pontiac reached its destination at the accident scene. C.Hyde knew where he was going by following the right car. D.The policeman was running after a speeder on Highway 40.

69. The driver of the Firebird .

A.took a wrong turn on the way B.was stopped by the police officer C.had some trouble with his car D.paid for the expenses of that accident

70. What is probably the best title for the passage?

A.Losing His Way B. Going My Way C.Fun on the Way D. Help on the Way

The men dressed as police officers stole about $200 million worth of art from the Isabella

Stewart Gardner Museum early this morning.

The two burglars(窃贼)knocked on a side door of the museum at about 1:15 am. They told the two security guards who were on duty that there was a disturbance in the area. The guards then made the very serious mistake of allowing the two men to go into the building. After they went in, the two burglars tied the guards up with tape.

The two men spent about two hours in the museum. During that time, they stole 11 paintings and an ancient Chinese vase. The stolen works included three paintings by Rembrandt.

A maintenance(保卫)worker discovered the two guards at about 7 am and called police. One of the greatest losses was Rembrandt’s works, “The Storm on the Sea of Galilee.” It was a very popular attraction at the museum and was one of the most valuable works stolen.

Museum officials said that the value of the stolen art is at least 200 million dollars, and may in fact be much more. The true value of the paintings is unknown, because they have not been on the market for nearly a century. According to law enforcement officials, this is considered to be the biggest theft ever in the United States. Officials are waiting to see whether the burglars will demand a ransom for the paintings or try to sell them to a private collector.

Museum officials and police are not sure why the burglars chose certain works and not others. There are other paintings in the museum that are even more valuable than the ones that were stolen.

Special investigators are looking into the theft and the museum’s security system. They believe that this is a “professional job”, because the people involved were well prepared and knew what they wanted. Investigators have already questioned the museum’s guards extensively. They would not give the names or ages of the guards, but one investigator said the Gardner hires and trains its own security staff. So far, the guards have not been identified as suspects in the case. An investigator said that anybody having any information about the robbery should contact the Boston Police Department immediately.

71. We can infer from the passage that .

A.the security guards didn’t identify the false policemen B.the police had accurate ideas of the robbery after investigating C.the burglars didn’t dare to sell the stolen things on the market

D.the security guards helped the thieves secrectly

72. According to the passage, “The Storm on the Sea of Galilee” was the following except that . A.it was Rembrandt’s works B.it was the most valuable work at the museum

C.it was very attractive to visitors D.it was one of the greatest losses

73. Which of the following best explains “demand a ransom for the paintings”?

A.Hide the paintings in a secret place. B.Send the paintings to some foreign countries. C.Ask for money to give the paintings back. D.Change them into more valuable things.

74. The investigators believe that this is a “professional job” because the burglars .

A.didn’t steal the most valuable works B.made careful plans about the theft C.tied the guards up with tape D.were dressed as police officers

75. According to the passage, ______

A.the art works stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum are valueless. B.it is illegal for the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum to train its own guards.

C.the security guards on duty that day are suspected. D.the works stolen haven’t been traded for about 100 years.

第一部分 阅读表达 (共5小题,每小题2分,共10分)

阅读下面的短文,然后根据信息及要求回答题后的问题。 The world’s first subway was built in London in 1863. at the time, the government was looking for a way to reduce traffic problems in the city of London. The poor areas of the city were so crowded with people that it was almost impossible for hore carriages to get around. The city officials were interested in trying to make it possible for workers to live outside of Londin and travel easily to work each day. If people had a cheap and convenient way that they could depend on to get to and from work, they would settle down outside of the city. This would help ease the pressure of too many people living in the poor parts in London. From these problems, the idea of the london underground, the first subway system, was born. The plans for building the underground met with several problems and delays, but the first track was finally opened in January 1863. a steam train pulled the cars along the first underground track which was six kilometers long. About 30,000 people got on the subway the first day. Riders were treated to comfortable seats and pleasant decorations inside each of the cars. However, the smoke from the engin soon filled the air in the tunnels with ash and black powder, as well as chemical gases. Fans had to be put in the tunnels later to keep the air clean enough for people to breathe. Even with its problems, riding the underground did become popular. It carried nine million riders in its first year. Modern subways have come a long way since the early days of the London Underground. Today there are 94 large underground rapid transit systems around the world. The busiest of these subway systems is the Tokyo Metro which opened in 1927. This efficient subway has two billion riders per year, and “pushers” work on the platforms during busy traffic hours to help push riders onto trains. At times, subway cars have been packed with up to 300 people! Shopping malls built in high traffic stations where riders move from one train to another have also helped the popularity of subways in Tokyo. Stations like the famous Ginza Sugo Eki Ginza Consolidated Station include underground department stores, suprermarkets, restaurants, and specialty shops. Shoppers never have to go above ground!

(One possible sample) Every year, almost all students in senior three and their parents will be bothered with a common trouble ---- whether to choose a key university first or to focus on a popular major instead Actually, some students think choosing favorite major means enjoying their study and school life in the following four years or even the rest of life. Because nobody will be bored of their preference from which they will in turn benefit much. However, some others would worry that it is not worthwhile to decide on furthering their study in a normal college, even though they can be with what they like to learn. In their point of view, it is the remarkable atmosphere of the

university that definetly counts. Furthermore, there is no doubt that the graduates from those key universities are always preferred in jobhunting. As far as I’m concerned, I’d rather put my favorite major in the first place. Whatever we choose means some kind of loss on the other hand. However, to some extent, we can make up by studying hard with our passion and enthusiasm.
