My Big Sister's Busy Day in Middle School
My big sister Mary is in 7th grade at the middle school downtown. She's 13 years old and always has a lot of stuff going on! I'm only 9, so her life seems super hectic and grown-up to me. But I think it's really cool to see what a typical day is like for a middle schooler.
It all starts at 6:30am when Mary's alarm clock blares that awful buzzing noise. She groans and rubs her eyes, never wanting to get out of her warm, cozy bed. But if she doesn't get up, she'll be late! After finally rolling out of bed, she trudges to the bathroom to take a quick shower and get ready for the day. Once she's dried off and her hair is brushed, Mary heads back to her room to get dressed. She has to wear a uniform to school - a white polo shirt, navy blue pants, and black shoes. Some of her friends think the uniforms are dorky, but I think Mary looks nice and put-together.
Next it's time for breakfast. If we're running late, Mary just grabs a granola bar or a pop-tart on her way out the door. But if there's time, Mom will make her oatmeal or scrambled eggs.
Mary's a big eater in the morning to fuel up for her busy day ahead.
The middle school is a 15 minute walk from our house, so Mary hefts her super heavy backpack onto her shoulders around 7:20am and heads out. I always feel bad seeing her lugging around that huge bag full of binders, textbooks, and school supplies. It looks exhausting! But she doesn't complain. Classes start at 7:45am for Mary. Her first few periods are always the hardest - math, science, and English first thing in the morning when she's still waking up. Those subjects require a lot of focus and brain power. But after a couple hours, she has life sciences or history which are a little more interesting to her. Lunchtime is at 11:30am and it's definitely one of the highlights of Mary's day. She meets up with her group of friends and they all gossip, joke around, and share snacks from their lunchboxes. Sometimes they go outside to the courtyard if it's nice out. But they only have 30 minutes to eat, so they have to hustle back to class when the bell rings.
In the afternoon, Mary has her electives and \"specials\" classes like art, music, gym, computers, and foreign language. Those are a nice break from the hardcore academics of the morning. She particularly loves art class and is really talented at
drawing. Sometimes she'll show me the sketches and paintings she's working on.
After her last class ends at 3:15pm, it's not time to go home yet! Mary is part of the drama club, so she has rehearsals a few days a week until 5pm. They're putting on a play in a couple months, so Mary and her friends have been memorizing their lines and practicing their scenes.
Finally, it's time to head home around 5:15pm. Mary is absolutely drained by this point! Lugging that heavy backpack back home is such a struggle. Once she's inside, she kicks off her shoes and immediately gets started on her piles of homework - worksheets, essays, studying for tests. So much work!
If she gets everything done at a reasonable hour, Mary might have a little down time before bed to watch some Netflix or scroll through social media. She particularly lovesteen dramas and following funny meme accounts. Sometimes her friends will FaceTime or send silly Snapchat videos which always crack her up.
Around 9 or 9:30pm, Mary starts getting ready for bed. She packs up her backpack for the next day's classes, takes a shower, and gets her sleep clothes on. Then it's lights out to do it all over again tomorrow! Phew, being a middle schooler seems
absolutely exhausting to me. I'll appreciate being a lazy elementary kid while I still can!
